 Four Fundamental Definitions in Islam

By Ali El Hanandeh

My dearest brothers and Sisters,

Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said:

“A true Muslim is a person whom other Muslims are safe from the mischief of his tongue and the mischief of his hands.

A true believer is a person whom other people can trust him on their lives and properties.

A true Migrant is a person who keeps himself away from doing evil and committing sin.

A true Mujahid is a person who struggles to keep himself steadfast.”

My beloved brothers and sisters; these beautiful words of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are full of wisdom.  Four simple definitions; easy to understand, easy to remember but are very important in every Muslim’s life.

First Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave us the definition of a Muslim, he said:

A true Muslim is a person whom other Muslims are safe from the mischief of his hands and the mischief of his tongue”

That is the basic definition of a true Muslim.  There is no use of saying “I am a Muslim” when I am harming everyone else.  There is no use of saying “I am a Muslim” when I am causing harm and damage to the Muslim community and other Muslims by means of my words and actions.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“Every Muslim is fully protected from other Muslims.  His blood (life is protected), his property and his honour (are protected)”

Many people, my dearest brothers and sisters, have fallen into the Satan’s trap and they consider abusing or harming other Muslims a trivial matter when it is in fact a serious thing.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“To abuse a Muslim with words is a form of hypocrisy but to fight against him is an act of Kufr (disbelieve)”

So, my beloved brothers and sisters; we have to be careful of how do we deal with others because:

“A true Muslim is one who other Muslims are safe from the mischief of his tongue and the mischief of his hands”.

Then, my dearest brothers and sisters, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) proceeded to give us another beautiful definition of a higher state than a basic Muslim.  This time Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) defined the Mu’min a believer, he said:

“A true believer is a person who other people can trust on their lives and property”

A true Muslim is a person whom other Muslims are safe from his mischief but a true believer is a person whom all people ( regardless of their religion) are safe his mischief.  In other words, my dearest brothers and sisters, a true believer is a person who wishes no harm to anyone.  A true believer does good to everyone be it Muslims or non-Muslims.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“By Allah! He does not truly believe.  By Allah! He is not a true believer.  By Allah! He is not a true believer.  The companions inquired: who is that O prophet of Allah?  Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) replied: A person whose neighbor is not safe from his mischief”

My dearest brothers and sisters, as Muslims we are expected to do good to everybody; Muslims and non-Muslims even the animals.

Allah (swt) says:

Allah (swt) says:

“Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight against your religion nor drive you out of your land that you be good to them and be just for Allah loves those who are just”

My dearest brothers and sisters,

“A true believer is a person who other people trust him on their lives and property”

Then my beloved brothers and sisters, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) defined the meaning of Muhajer (a migrant), he said:

“A true migrant is a person who migrates away with himself from doing evil”

In Islam, my dearest brothers and sisters, the status of “hijrah” or “Muhajer” is highly regarded, that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself was very proud to be a Muhajer, he said:

“Had it not been for the Hijrah, I would have wished to be one of the Ansar”

That is how highly regarded is Hijrah, that Prophet Muhammad was proud of his status as a Muhajer.  Yet, brothers and sisters, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told us that the true meaning of Hijrah is to keep yourself away from doing evil and committing sin.

It is so important for everyone of us to understand this because as Muslims living among non Muslims, we are viewed as representatives of Islam.  What we do in most cases is taken literally by non-Muslims as an Islamic act.

We are all migrants here by the literal meaning of the word, but we also need to act as Muhajer’s who represent the real meaning of the word, as our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“A true migrant is a person who keeps himself away from doing evil and committing sin”

Four basic definitions that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us which we need to fully understand and apply to our lives;

The first is: who is the Muslim.

Prophet Muhammad defined a true Muslim by saying:

“A true Muslim is a person whom other Muslims are safe from the mischief of his hands and his tongue”

The second, Prophet Muhammad taught us who is a true believer, he said:

“A true believer is a person whom others can trust him on their lives and property”

Then Prophet Muhammad taught us who is the Muhajer.  He explained:

“A true migrant is a person who keeps himself away from committing evil”

And last but not least Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) defined to us the true meaning of Mujahid he said:

“A true Mujahid is a person who struggles to keep himself stead fast on the path of Allah”
