A call to Muslim Women be like Khadijah

By Ali El Hanandeh

My dearest brothers and sisters,

Lately we have been hearing a lot about so called Muslim women who are to re-interpret Islam from their own perspective and other women who want to revive Islam but with their own ideas (wala haula wala quata illa billah).  And I wish to talk to you about these new innovations as they are really dangerous on the muslim community; especially, our sisters who are struggling hard to maintain a balance in their lives being Muslim women in a vast majority of non-Muslim environment.  But before, I even start; I wish to congratulate our sisters who are doing their best to be Muslims and successful women at the same time.  We wish to tell you sisters; we appreciate what you are doing!  And we know how hard it is to be in such situation.  Allah (swt) knows and is well aware of you; and only He will compensate you for your effort.  But, I also wish to tell you, my dearest sisters; do not fall into the traps of those who are going all the way to corrupt your faith; no matter how eloquent and appealing are their arguments.  Remember our guide is Muhammad (saws) not someone who studied in a university hardly scratching the surface of Islam and yet publishes books to re-interpret Islam or revive Islam from her or his point of view.

My beloved brothers and sisters; we follow Muhammad (peace be upon him) he is our guide.  He has taught us right from wrong.  He left for us a perfect sunnah that as long as we hold onto it we will never be mislead.

My beloved brothers and sisters, the status of women in Islam is very high and well regarded.  Allah (swt) appreciates your contributions and He will reward you for it very generously.  Islam is not anti-feminine; or anti-women; but it is not an extreme feminist movement either.

My dearest sisters; do not listen to those callers of the feminist movements; all what they want is to break the structure of life that Allah has prescribed to you.

Today my dearest Sisters and brothers, I wish to share with you a story of a great Muslim woman.  A woman who in fact was the queen of the heart of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and I will let you decide for yourself who do you wish to follow; the example of this great woman or those callers to hellfire who are trying to get you and deviate you away from the right path with their contemporary, eloquent and highly complicated arguments that hold no substance.

The woman, I wish to speak about today is our greatest mother of the believers and the most beloved woman to the heart of our Prophet Muhammad (saws).  A woman whom Allah sent Jibreel (as) specifically from heaven to earth to tell Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that Allah sends her His salam (greetings) and bring to her glad tidings of  a great house in Jannah.  She is Assaydah Khadijah binte Khwailid (may Allah be pleased with her).

My dearest brothers and sisters; Our mother Khadijah was a woman who possessed superior qualities, that no woman of her time or anytime ever possessed.  Even before Islam; people of Mecca used to call her: Al Tahirah (the pure woman).  She was so pure and excellent in her character that even the greatest men of her time would pay her the greatest respect.

Khadijah, my beloved brothers and sisters, was a woman of perfection.  She was considered among the most beautiful women of her time and when it came to wisdom she was the wisest of her time.  She was a woman of success in every aspect of her life.  Very rich and successful business woman, wife and mother.  But above all; she was a woman of faith.

In fact she knew about the prophethood of Muhammad even before Muhammad (peace be upon him) suspected it and that is why she married him.

And when Prophet Muhammad (saws) received the message; she was the first to accept his teachings.  She was so precise in following her husband and supporting him even if it meant that she had to suffer.  She was precise and accurate in following Islam; word by word, letter by letter without the slightest deviation.  She was so instrumental in spreading the message of Islam by providing money, help and support to the Muslims.  She could have claimed fame if she wanted; but she was not doing it for fame or acknowledgment, she did it to please Allah (swt).  And the reward came to her when Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"خير نسائها مريم بنت عمران و خير نسائها خديجه"

"The best woman in heaven is Miriam binte Imran (the mother of Jesus) and the  best woman on earth is Khadijah"

Khadijah, my dearest brothers and sisters, with her true devotion to Allah and his messenger became the queen of Prophet Muhammad’s heart.  That when she passed away; Prophet Muhammad (saws) did not re-marry for a long time and he was deeply saddened that his companions said: We were afraid that something might happen to him because of his sadness.

When one of the companion women came to prophet Muhammad to inquire if he wishes to remarry.  He replied to her: ”Who can it be after Khadijah”.  No one ever filled the space that Khadijah occupied in the heart of Prophet Muhammad (saws).  That even after years of her departure, when ever he saw one of her friends; he would be very happy and would be very generous and kind to them.  At one time, Prophet Muhammad (saws) was in the house of Aysha (may Allah be pleased with her) when a woman (a friend of Khadijah) came and sought permission to see the prophet (saws).  He remembered Khadijah and he jumped of his seat, full of happiness and said: Khadijah!  Aysha; naturally got upset; and she said to him: Khadijah; Khadijah; as if there were no women on the face of the earth other than her.  What do you remember of an old woman who had died.  After Allah has given you better than her.  Prophet Muhammad (saws) got very upset with her and said; No by Allah.  No one is better than Khadijah.  She believed in me when everyone else called me a liar, and she supported me with her self and money when everyone else withheld his support from me and Allah grated me children with her.

Do you feel the love of Prophet Muhammad (saws) to Khadijah.  Sisters, do you see what a woman is worth in Islam.  Make Khadijah your role model.  She is the woman you want to follow.  She is the woman who will lead you to Jannah.

Be like her.  Love her.  Tell yourself I want to meet Khadijah on the Day of Judgment and tell her: Mother; I loved you so much and I tried to follow your example in obeying Allah and his messenger.  I followed what Allah had instructed me to do in the Quran and the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad.  I did not listen to those women who were trying to claim a place in history by deviating away from the truth and re-interpreting Quran and Hadith to suit their opinions and perspectives.

Listen my brothers and sister; Islam now is truly passing a difficult time.  There are so many tribulations and turmoil.  And there are many people even from among the Muslims are now put on the trial; but you know how to judge; Allah’s commands are clear and the companion women lives are clear.  Khadijah did not have a PhD or a degree in Theology but she had a heart full of faith and now we have Professors and degree holders who want to re-interpret Islam.  Who do you want to follow?

As for me; I follow Khadijah because she is my mother.  You see my dearest brothers and sister; a mother would never hurt her child.  But power seekers do not think of anyone or anything but achieving their goals.  You want to follow them; go ahead they will hurt you and on the Day of Judgment they will say:

"و ما كان لي عليهم من سلطان إلأ أن دعوتهم فاستجابوا لي"

"I had no power over them except that I invited them and they followed me"

Do not follow them.  They will disappoint you and denounce you and they will never bring any good to you.

Be like Khadijah and earn a place in the heart of Prophet Muhammad (saws) that no one else can replace.

Brothers and sisters,

Just to conclude our story; I wish to narrate to you this incident;

On the day of the conquest of  Mecca and when every body was surrounding the Prophet (saws).  The Muslim army, the people of Mecca and all the happenings are going on; Prophet Muhammad (saws) noticed an old woman in the crowd.  He dismounted his camel and walked to her very happily.  Then he took her aside and offered her to sit on his cloak.  And they sat for while and they talked for a long time.  The people were surprised, so when he came back they asked him; who was she?  Prophet Muhammad (saws) replied: She was one of Khadijah’s Friends.  They asked him: what were you talking about?  He answered: We remembered the good old days of Khadijah.

May Allah grant us his love!

The love of His messenger Muhammad (saws)

The love of those whom he loves

And the love of every deed that brings us closer to his love.

May Allah guide our youth women and men and help them to remain steadfast on the true faith of Islam.

May Allah save our women from the deviations of those feminist movements and those who try to re-interpret Islam according to their whims and desires.

May Allah help us to see the truth and act upon it.
